Psychologist Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, the Psychologist will know or be able to do the following as a result of having taken this course...
-Explain seven types of change talk that should be reinforced in the counseling session.
-Identify an example of how to respond to client/patient sustaining talk that acknowledges it without encouraging it.
-Describe one technique to strenghten a client/patient's commitment to change.
-Discuss a technique to use with the client/patient who blames the referring source and acuses them of an inaccurate perception of the situation.
-Identify three steps in the process of helping clients develop intrinsic motivation.
-Explain three approaches to goal sampling that may be helpful for clients who are not committed to abstinence as a change goal.
-Describe five strategies that therapist can use to allow the client/patient to identify and discuss possible barriers to action.
The instructional level of this course is introductory, intermediate, or advanced depending on the learners clinical area of expertise.
