"Calculating the Costs" Exercise

  Client writes down answers to  the following questions. 
   
1. How much does my habit cost me per day? Week?  Month? Year? 
2. What could I save in other benefits: social,  financial, sexual, security? 
3. To what other activities could I have applied  this time and money? 
"Photo Technique"  
    Play CD Track 3 for more information regarding this technique. 
  1.  Client finds photo of him or herself as a  child.  2. Client studies the photo.  3. Client answers the question "Do you love  the child in the photo and can you relate to it?"  4. Client writes a few words about his or her  inner child. 
"Drawing Exercise" 
    Play CD Track 3 for more information regarding this technique. 
  1. Client uses his or her  non-dominant hand to draw a picture of him or herself as a child with crayons  or colored pencils. 2. Client discusses choices in color and activity in the  drawing.  
"Finding the Trouble Spot" Exercise  
    Play CD Track 4 for more information regarding this technique. 
  1.  Client gets comfortable and spends a few  minutes focusing on his or her body. Client then finds the spot in his or her  body where tension is most strongly concentrated and puts awareness on that  spot.  2. Client uses imagery to  visualize soothing, relaxing warmth surrounding her to ease that discomfort.  Client places hand over that spot.  3.  Client asks his or her body what it wants to tell him or her.  4. For about 10 minutes, client listens to  what his or her body tells him or her and pays attention to all images, ideas,  physical sensations, and thoughts that surface into awareness.  5. Client begins a dialogue with inner child  voice. 
"Having a Good Cry" Exercise

  1. Client recalls someone he  or she has hurt through his or her addiction.   2. Client finds where that feeling is in his or her body.  3. Client expresses that feeling through  tears. 
"Evaluate the Options" Exercise

  Client answers the following  questions regarding the choice he or she must make. 
   
1. Is this choice practical? 
2. If not, are aspects of it practical, or can you       make it practical? 
3. What are the benefits? 
4. What are the drawbacks? 
5. Do you know the steps to follow to bring this       choice about? 
6. Do you feel good about this choice? 
7. Does it make sense? Can you explain it clearly to       someone else or on paper? 
8. Would you advise a friend to make this choice? 
"Tapping Your Individuality" Exercise

  1. Client asks him or herself  his or her own opinions about the situation in question.  2. Client listens to his or her answers.  3. Client shares his or her personal desires  with a spouse or friend. 
"Ready to Leave Treatment" Exercise

  Client answers the following  questions using only the answers "yes" and "no." 
1. Have you identified and admitted your addictive       behavior? 
2. Have you maintained sobriety for six moths to a       year without relapse? 
3. Have you completed the steps to a recovery       program at least once? 
4. Have you learned to recognize and handle       successfully the triggers and mechanisms that set off your addictive       behavior? 
5. Have you shared your story repeatedly with       others, and listened to theirs? 
6. Are you able to rely on others for support and ask       for help when you need it? 
7. Have you had a successful relationship with a       sponsor, buddy, or other support person for a significant time? 
8. Have you severed or limited all relationships       with people who supported your addiction unless they are also fully in recovery? 
9. Can you say no when tempted or pressured? 
10. Do you know the difference between instant and       deferred gratification, and can you choose intelligently between them? 
11. Can you act on thoughtful decisions instead of       impulsively reacting to events and circumstances? 
12. Do you have a clear sense of who you are and what       your goals are? 
"Slogan Repetition" Exercise 
    Play CD Track 9 for more information regarding this technique. 
  1. Client chooses a positive  statement about his or her ability to take care of him or herself.  2. Client copies the statement to several  note cards.  3. Client places note cards  in several places where he or she will see them, such as on the refrigerator,  on the bathroom mirror, in his or her wallet or purse, or on a desk at  work.  4. Client repeats the statement  every time he or she sees it.  5. Once  client has memorized and internalized the statement, he or she chooses a new  slogan and repeats the process. 
"Awareness, Learning, Forgiveness"  Process  
    Play CD Track 10 for more information regarding this technique. 
  1.  Client becomes aware of his or her  destructive thoughts and behaviors. Client lists these thoughts and writes new,  reassuring thoughts next to them.  2.  Client takes small steps to build the learning skills of risk-taking, problem-solving,  and self-confidence.  3. Client forgives  him or herself. 
 "Pushing the Right Button" Exercise 
    Play CD Track 11 for more information regarding this technique. 
  1. Client remembers a  stressful time during the week, paying attention to his or her feelings,  thoughts, and how his or her body reacted.   2. Client imagines a dial like one on a stereo that turns the volume  down.  Client turns this dial down.  3. Client pictures a button next to the dial.  Client pushes this button for Instant Calmness. 
"Ritual for Release" Exercise  
    Play CD Track 11 for more information regarding this technique. 
  1.  Client stands with legs shoulder-width apart  and feet planted solidly on the ground. Client’s arms should be loose at his or  her side. Client’s body should be relaxed.   2. Client leans forward from hips, letting upper body hang down toward  the ground. Client’s arms should be loose with fingertips dangling toward the  floor.  3. Client breathes deeply and  relaxes his body incrementally.  4.  Client closes his or her eyes and visualizes his or her body being completely  relaxed.  5. Client comes up without  straining his or her back by rolling up slowly, one vertebra at a time. 
"Coping with Fear" Exercise 
    Play CD Track 13 for more information regarding this technique. 
  1. Client lists three biggest  fears in recovery. Client accepts that fear is normal.  2. Client lives one day at a time.  3. Client takes problems one at a time.  4. Client uses the "Dump-It" button for  problems he or she cannot solve. 
"Life Purpose" Exercise

  Client answers the following  questions about his or her needs and desires as an independent person. 
1. What is your purpose in life? 
2. What are your long term goals that will move you       towards your greater purpose in life? 
3. What are your short term goals that will move you       towards your long term goals? 
4. What immediate choices are you in the process of       making?
